Fünf Jahre nach Softs sind Soft Machine eine völlig andere Band. Lediglich Keyboarder Karl Jenkins und Schlagzeuger John Marshall sind noch an Bord.
Musikalisch wirkt sich das nur bedingt aus. Land of Cockayne lässt sich gut aus der Geschichte von Soft Machine und dem Zeitgeist Anfang der 80er herleiten. Die vom Jazz geprägten Fusion-Sounds sind weiterhin prägend. Dazu kommt ein etwas stärkeres Eingehen auf den Synthesizer und eine Annäherung an eher poppige Sounds.
Der Opener könnte, wenn man das Saxophon-Solo mal rausnimmt, auch auf Alan Parsons Eve-Album stehen. Die Soundtrack-Streicher beamen „Isle of the Blessed“ in die Sixties.
Alle anderen Stücken liefern solide Fusion-Kost ab.
