Ein 6 CD-Box? Von Noel Richards? Wer ist das denn?
Zuerst einmal ist das ein Mann, der am 15 Juli dieses Jahres ein Konzert in Berlin geben will – und dafür mal eben das Olympia-Stadion gebucht hat. Kriegt der ja doch nicht voll? Vorsicht! Seiner letzten CD – passend Road to Berlin betitelt – liegt eine DVD bei, die ein entsprechendes Ereignis dokumentiert, mit dem Richards 1997 das Wembley-Stadion in London gefüllt hat.
Was steckt dahinter? Lassen wir die Katze endlich aus dem Sack. Noel Richards ist frommer Anbetungsleiter, der seit Anfang den 80er Jahre in der Nähe von London Anbetungsgottesdienste mit moderner Musik leitet. Die Musik hat er dabei zunehmend selbst geschrieben. Die gigantischen Events in London und jetzt in Berlin sind die ultimative Vergrößerung dieser Anbetungsgottesdienste, mit denen Jesus als der “Champion of the World“ verkündet werden soll – natürlich nicht von Richards allein, sondern von einer ganzen Staffel internationaler christlicher Künstler und einer ganzen Reihe von Anbetungsleitern, die immer wieder Kurzpredigten einstreuen werden.
Mit 25 Years; The Singer, The Songs kann man sich nun gründlich in die musikalische Vergangenheit des Initiators der Mega-Predigt einarbeiten. Die Box enthält fünf in den Jahren 1990 – 1999 veröffentlichte Alben und eine neue Live-Compilation.
Dazu gibt es ein fettes Booklet, das die Alben in die Karrieregeschichte Richards einsortiert und außerdem die Texte aller 71(!) Stücke enthält. Die Alben haben für diese Edition neue Cover erhalten, die man als besonderen Gag zusammen mit dem aufgeschlagenen Booklet zu einer Gitarre zusammenlegen kann.
Musikalisch finden wir auf den CDs eher softe Rockmusik, mal etwas erdiger, mal mit Country-, oder Folk-Einschlag. Gelegentlich hört man Einflüsse der Eagles, von Cat Stevens oder Toto im Hintergrund.
Das Highlight heißt Warrior und ist das besonders rockige dritte Album. Mit dem Opener verfügt es über einen herrlich treibenden Rock-Pop-Song, der sich später auf der Live-CD als krachender Rocker für die obligatorischen Mitsingspielchen regelrecht aufdrängt. “Over the Mountains and the Sea” verzaubert mit einem schönen Saxophon. ”The Battle is the Lord's” ist ein groovender Soft-Rocker mit tollen Gitarren-Soli, während ”I walk by Faith” richtig dreckiger Rock mit Harp ist.
Natürlich gibt es bei der Menge der Songs auch Durchhänger, aber überwiegend ist das Material im grünen Bereich, so dass man auch den etwas durchsichtigen Versuch auf der Live-CD in Queens (viel zu große) Fußstapfen zu treten (”The World is looking for a Hero (Champion)“), gnädig verzeiht.
